Leading-Edge Technology for Faster, Safer Surgery

daVinci technology at Munson Medical CenterMunson Healthcare surgical teams use some of the most advanced technology in northern Michigan to perform a wide variety of surgical procedures. Our leading-edge technology, equipment, and devices offer many quality and safety benefits including:

  • Ability to treat a wide range of conditions
  • Faster recoveries
  • Fewer complications
  • Less bleeding
  • Less time under anesthesia, or need for general anesthesia
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Smaller incisions

For many surgical procedures, our surgical specialists use minimally invasive laser, endoscopic, or laparoscopic techniques. This advanced capability benefits patients for many types of procedures, including:

With a commitment to advancing care with surgical excellence and the latest technology available, Munson Healthcare offers advanced technologies, such as the CardioMEMS™ Heart Failure System, and the da Vinci® Surgical System.

CardioMEMS

Munson Healthcare was one of the first health systems in the nation to offer the CardioMEMS Heart Failure System. It is the first FDA-approved monitoring device shown to reduce the rate of hospitalization for heart failure by nearly 40 percent — without the need for additional clinic or hospital visits.

During a minimally-invasive procedure, a tiny sensor is implanted into the pulmonary artery to directly measure pressure. Then, once a day, you lie on a special portable pillow with an antenna to transmit sensor readings to your doctor. If a reading is abnormal, an alert sent to your doctor’s smartphone prompts him or her to contact you immediately.

The da Vinci® Surgical System

Munson Healthcare was the first health system in northern Michigan to offer the da Vinci® robotic surgical system and it is currently available at Munson Medical Center and Otsego Memorial Hospital. One of the latest innovations in minimally-invasive surgery, this technology lets surgeons perform complex procedures through a just few tiny incisions — roughly the diameter of a pencil.

The da Vinci® surgical system uses precision instruments and a high-definition 3D camera to give surgeons a full-color, magnified view of the surgical site. It is used for:

  • Bowel surgery
  • Cholecystectomy
  • Gynecologic cancer
  • Hernia repair
  • Hysterectomy
  • Kidney conditions, such as blockages
  • Prostatectomy (prostate removal)

Patients who have robotic surgery often experience:

  • Decreased risk of infection and bleeding
  • Faster recovery time
  • Less pain and scarring than traditional open surgery
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Smaller or fewer incisions

Otsego Memorial Hospital completed its 1,000th robotic surgery case in April 2021. The team’s da Vinci® XI robot is utilized daily including weekend emergency cases when appropriate. The XI is the most advanced robotic surgery technology in use today and will help expand the OMH robotic surgery program to help even more patients.

The OMH robotic surgery program debuted on May 17, 2017. After five years of operation, the team has grown to include three general surgeons, one OB/GYN surgeon, and one PA-C trained and credentialed to perform robotic-assisted surgery.
