Academics
The didactic program of the family medicine residency is extensive and varied, utilizing many different teaching and learning methods.
Weekly Didactics
These occur in a block fashion on Wednesday and at other times. These cover the breadth of family medicine and also include:
- Evidence-based medicine
- EKG review
- Case presentations
- OB case conference
- Dermatology
- Osteopathic manipulative medicine
Academic Weeks
Academic weeks, a unique aspect to the program, consist of four weeks per year utilized for special learning opportunities. During these weeks, residents do not have rotational assignments. Therefore, they can devote extended periods of time to planned workshops, seminars, and community visitation activities. These are based on a three-year rotating curriculum as follows:
- Summer: Orientation week
- Fall: Diabetes, COPD/asthma, adolescent medicine
- Winter: Occupational medicine, sports medicine, gynecology
- Spring: Resident-selected theme
Statewide Campus System
Our program participates in the Statewide Campus System through Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. This involves residents traveling to East Lansing, Mich. once a month, approximately nine months per year.

- ALSO course
- APLS course
- Colposcopy workshops
- Dermatological procedures
- Practice management
- Osteopathic manipulative medicine
Hospital-Based Didactics
Munson Medical Center also offers a variety of educational activities that residents are encouraged to attend including:
- Tuesday Grand Rounds
- Friday Medical Conference
- Tumor Board
- Other specialty-specific educational opportunities
