Application Information for the Munson Family Medicine Residency Program
Thank you for your interest in the Munson Family Medicine Residency program.
The Family Medicine Residency Program at Munson Medical Center is an unopposed, ACGME w/ Osteopathic Recognition residency located in Traverse City, Michigan. The curriculum focuses on preparing residents for rural family medicine opportunities in northern Michigan.
Application Requirements
To have your application reviewed by this program:
- You must be a U.S. citizen or have permanent resident status (green card holder). Our hospital system is unable to sponsor or support any visas.
- You must be eligible to be licensed in all 50 states and U.S. territories as demonstrated by:
- Graduation from an LCME fully-accredited medical school
- Graduation from an AOA/COCA fully-accredited medical school
- International medical graduates (IMGs) having a valid ECFMG, all medical school rotations being at ACGME-accredited sites, and enrolled/graduated from an ECFMG-approved school recognized in all 50 states and U.S. territories.
- You should have had a four-year undergraduate degree before entering medical school.
- You should have graduated from medical school within two years of residency beginning. If you have not, your application should show time spent in clinical settings since the time of graduation to be considered for an interview.
If you do meet the above criteria, your application will flow into an active file for review. Applications will be prioritized utilizing a number of criteria which includes:
- Personal connections to Northern Michigan
- COMLEX/USMLE performance
- 3-4 Strong letters of recommendation
- Medical school performance
- Demonstrated passion for rural medicine or the underserved through participation in extracurricular activities
Audition Rotations
Requests for audition rotations (typically August – December) will be accepted beginning January 1 due to the challenging nature of housing in Traverse City. Unfortunately, we do not provide housing for auditioning students. The slots are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.
The rotations are offered in four-week blocks aligning to our residency calendar with the exception of two two-week slots around our fall resident development week. There are no more than four students on this rotation at any one time. These rotations are reserved for students sincerely planning to apply to our program. Please see below to verify our criteria for applying to our residency.
Step II Results
We realize current medical school students may not have Step II results on transcript when they apply. Candidates must have passed both Step I and II (both parts) to be added to our Match Rank Order List. Plan accordingly.
ECFMG Certificates
We also realize that current foreign medical school students will not have completed the requirements for ECFMG at the time of their application and interview. However, ECFMG certificates must be received prior to the residency beginning (which is a requirement for licensing by state of Michigan). Plan accordingly.
Application Procedure
Both allopathic and osteopathic candidates must participate in the NRMP Match utilizing the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
Applications will be reviewed upon their release from ERAS and selected candidates will be invited to schedule an interview starting on the Wednesday following the opening of application review. Additional invitations will be sent on Friday and then as needed until all interview slots (90) are filled.
Those invited to interview have 72-hours to schedule their interview. Virtual interviews via ZOOM will be held on Thursday mornings, Friday mornings, or some Thursday afternoons. Three in-person interview days will be offered this year for those who desire to see the residency; these will be on Fridays. The first interviews begin the second Thursday in October. Applications must be received by November 30 to be considered for our last interview spots scheduled for the second week of December.
