To reduce prescription misuse, state and federal law will someday require prescribers to electronically transmit all prescriptions, including those for controlled substances. Although originally planned to go into effect on Oct. 1, 2021, this mandate has been extended to Jan. 1, 2023.
This date change was made to align the state’s e-prescribing requirement, per Public Act 134 of 2020, with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) similar requirement. While Oct. 1, 2021, marked the implementation date for CMS’ requirement, the agency is not enforcing its requirement until Jan. 1, 2023. As of that date, physicians who are not in compliance will be penalized.
