Supporting Safe Housing and Financial Independence for Survivors of Domestic Violence in Northern Michigan
Munson Healthcare has announced a $10,000 gift to River House, Inc., an intimate partner domestic violence and sexual assault shelter serving women and children in northern Michigan. This contribution reflects Munson Healthcare’s commitment to addressing economic security, a key priority identified in its Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA), and supporting organizations that help close gaps in care and improve overall well-being.
"Economic security is foundational to health," said Kirsten Korth-White, Munson Healthcare East Region President. "River House not only provides safety in times of crisis but also equips survivors with tools to rebuild their lives and achieve financial stability. This gift reflects our commitment to improving health by addressing the root causes of instability."
In addition to financial support, Munson Healthcare Grayling team members recently spent a day at River House learning about domestic violence and contributing to the mission in hands-on ways. Staff organized and cleaned the shelter—reinforcing the hospital’s commitment to both education and action in addressing community needs.
"This partnership helps us provide more than shelter — it gives survivors the tools to rebuild their lives. From financial planning to employment readiness, these programs create pathways to independence and break cycles of violence and poverty," said Kim Scott, Executive Director of River House.
"For years, we’ve had employees who have supported River House on their own time because they believe in its mission. We’re proud to align our giving with the passions of our team," Korth-White added.
River House provides emergency shelter and comprehensive services for survivors of domestic and sexual violence, including:
- Emergency Shelter: Safe housing for survivors and their children
- 24/7 Crisis Hotline: Immediate support and intervention
- Legal Advocacy: Assistance with protective orders and court navigation
- Counseling & Support Groups: Trauma-informed care for individuals and families
- Children’s Programs: Specialized support for youth impacted by violence
- Economic Security Support: Employment readiness and financial planning
- Community Education: Prevention programs to reduce violence and promote safety
River House is sustained through generous community donations and proceeds from its resale shop, which help fund critical services for survivors. These resources ensure that programs remain accessible and responsive to the needs of those in crisis.
Munson Healthcare’s giving strategy prioritizes intentional investments in organizations aligned with the CHNA. Since its inception in 2024, this strategy has directed more than $550,000 to community partners working to address social determinants of health. River House plays a vital role in stabilizing housing for survivors, preventing homelessness, and promoting long-term independence through employment readiness and financial literacy programs.
Through these efforts, Munson Healthcare continues to build stronger, healthier communities — one meal, and one voice, at a time.
