Openings available for ambassadors and general volunteers

Munson Healthcare Otsego Memorial Hospital (OMH) Volunteer Services is excited to announce immediate openings for ambassadors and general volunteers.

During the COVID-19 Pandemic, volunteers were unable to provide their services. With the new year upon us, OMH is proud to welcome volunteers back. “The impact that volunteers have on staff and patients is indescribable,” said OMH president Rob Richardson. “Volunteers bring an extra layer of compassion and care. In the short time we’ve had volunteers back at OMH, they have made a huge impact on patients and the healthcare team.”

The newly refreshed volunteer program allows one to be flexible and opportunities tailored to individual strengths and interests. “There is something for everyone here,” said Lillian Mazur, a volunteer who has returned to OMH. “Our goal is to help staff and patients while ensuring volunteers find roles they enjoy. Even something as simple as smiling and visiting can put a patient at ease. It’s the simple things that make a difference and I love the feeling of helping others.”

One volunteer opportunity is to be an ambassador, a role focused on assisting patients, visitors, and staff throughout the hospital with quality customer service. Mazur describes the ideal ambassador as “someone who is patient, courteous, empathetic, and tactful—someone who’s genuinely helpful and comfortable engaging in conversation. This person should be able to make others feel welcome and supported in every interaction.”

Ambassadors also play a vital role in answering questions, giving directions, transporting patients by wheelchair, and providing an escort to patients or visitors to their destination with compassion and professionalism. Ambassadors are currently needed daily, and hours are flexible.

For those who prefer a different type of volunteer experience, OMH also offers department-specific roles that support various areas of the hospital. These opportunities allow volunteers to contribute in ways that align with their interests and strengths. One unique option is our Pet Therapy Program, which brings comfort and emotional support to patients through certified therapy animals. If you're curious about what roles might be a good fit—or interested in learning how your pet could become part of the therapy program—reach out to Volunteer Services to learn more and explore the possibilities.

All volunteers at OMH play a crucial part in creating a compassionate, welcoming, and community-focused environment for patients, visitors and staff. Most volunteer shifts are only a few hours a week and can provide much-needed support and empathy to anyone who enters the hospital doors.

If you’re passionate about helping others and making a meaningful impact in your community, we invite you to join the OMH team. All volunteers will receive orientation and role-specific training.
