New Training Requirement for DEA License Renewal
Prescriptions for buprenorphine now only require a standard DEA registration number. The x-waiver is no longer required for any prescriber to treat patients with buprenorphine for opioid use disorder. The Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act, as of June 27, 2023, requires most licensed prescribers who are either renewing or applying for a new controlled substance DEA license to have completed at least 8 hours of opioid or other substance use disorders (SUD) training.
