Prevention Services: PrEVENT Clinic
An HIV prevention clinic – PrEVENT – is located within the Thomas Judd Care Center in Traverse City. It is the only one of its kind in northern Michigan. The clinic provides medication to protect people most at risk of developing the disease.
The PrEVENT clinic provides pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), and education with the goal of preventing the spread of HIV in our community and beyond.
How does PrEP work?

PrEP only works when taken on a daily basis. The risk of contracting HIV is reduced to between 96 percent and 99 percent when taken as prescribed.

The medication is U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved with the requirement that it be used every day, even during periods of minimal or low-risk sexual activity.

PrEP is covered by most insurance plans, including Medicaid and Medicare. Co-pays may vary.
How does PEP work?
PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) involves taking antiretroviral medicines after being potentially exposed to HIV to prevent becoming infected. PEP is used in emergency situations and must be started within 72 hours after a possible exposure to HIV.
