HIV Prevention Services
Thomas Judd Care Center provides comprehensive HIV prevention services in a confidential, welcoming healthcare setting. We are proud to offer the only program of this level in Northern Michigan. Our prevention services combine medication, education, and ongoing support to help reduce new HIV infections and improve overall community health.
HIV Prevention Medications
Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis
Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is a highly effective medication used to prevent HIV before exposure occurs. When taken as prescribed, PrEP reduces the risk of acquiring HIV by 96–99 percent. PrEP is available in multiple forms, including daily oral medication and long-acting injectable options. Our clinical team works closely with each patient to determine the option that best fits their needs and provides ongoing monitoring and support to ensure effectiveness. PrEP is FDA-approved and covered by most insurance plans, including Medicaid and Medicare. Assistance may be available to help address cost or access concerns.
Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP)
Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) is an emergency medication regimen taken after a possible exposure to HIV. PEP must be started within 72 hours of exposure to be effective. Our team can quickly assess whether PEP is appropriate and guide patients through next steps in a confidential and supportive setting.
PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) involves taking antiretroviral medicines after being potentially exposed to HIV to prevent becoming infected. PEP is used in emergency situations and must be started within 72 hours after a possible exposure to HIV.
Education and Support
In addition to medication, Thomas Judd Care Center provides education and counseling to help individuals understand their risk, make informed decisions, and access prevention tools that support overall health and well-being.
