Munson Healthcare continues to expand access to sports medicine expertise across Northern Michigan through its team of fellowship-trained sports medicine physicians, including Dr. Sean Beyer, Dr. Grant Carey, and Dr. Brent Geers. With specialists serving communities across the health system, patients and athletes have greater access than ever to coordinated orthopedic and sports medicine care close to home.

As part of this commitment, Dr. Grant Carey has been named Team Physician for Traverse City West Senior High School, where he will partner closely with athletic trainer Mikayla Scholts to provide injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, and return-to-play support for student athletes throughout the year.

Together, these physicians bring elite-level experience caring for everyone from high school athletes to collegiate competitors and professional sports organizations, while sharing a common goal: helping Northern Michigan athletes safely return to the sports and activities they love.

"Student athletes put their hearts into every practice, game, and season," said Dr. Grant Carey, orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist with Munson Orthopedic Institute. "I'm excited to work alongside athletic trainer Mikayla Scholts, coaches, and families to help keep athletes healthy and provide timely care when injuries occur. Having a strong local support team can make a meaningful difference in an athlete's season and long-term development."

A Northern Michigan native raised in the Higgins Lake area, Dr. Grant Carey brings both elite training and a personal connection to the region's athletic community. He earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan, completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the renowned Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, where he worked with the New York Giants medical staff, and completed advanced fellowship training in sports medicine, shoulder, and elbow surgery at OrthoCarolina in Charlotte, North Carolina. During his fellowship, he served as an associate team physician for the Carolina Panthers, Charlotte FC, and the Charlotte Knights. As a former high school and collegiate athlete, Dr. Carey understands firsthand the impact sports can have on a young person's life.

Munson's sports medicine program is further strengthened by Dr. Sean Beyer, a fellowship-trained orthopedic sports medicine surgeon whose experience includes serving as an associate team physician for the Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals, and University of Kansas Athletics. He provides care to patients in Charlevoix, Gaylord and Petoskey.

"Athletes are driven by goals," said Dr. Beyer. "Whether it's returning for the playoffs, competing at the next level, or staying active in everyday life, every patient's definition of success is different. My role is to understand those goals and develop a treatment plan that helps them safely get back to what matters most."

Also joining the team is Dr. Brent Geers, a Michigan native specializing in sports-related shoulder and knee injuries. He is known for his collaborative approach to care and serves patients throughout the Cadillac Area.

"Injuries can be frustrating and disruptive, especially for active patients," said Dr. Geers. "I enjoy helping people through the recovery process, building their confidence, and seeing them return to the activities that are important to them."

The expansion reflects Munson's continued investment in providing specialized orthopedic and sports medicine care close to home.

From youth and high school athletes to active adults and weekend warriors, Munson's sports medicine team offers injury prevention, diagnostic expertise, surgical and non-surgical treatment, rehabilitation, and return-to-play support across Northern Michigan.

When injury sidelines an athlete, patients can rely on a team that combines local access with the experience and resources needed to help them return to the activities they enjoy.
