Munson Healthcare Honors National Cancer Survivor Month by Celebrating Oncology Caregivers Who Are Survivors
06.17.2026

In recognition of National Cancer Survivor Month, Munson Healthcare is honoring the strength, resilience, and dedication of cancer survivors across northern Michigan—including two team members who bring a uniquely powerful perspective to their roles in oncology care.

At the heart of this recognition are Jenn Busick, RN, and Rachel Weatherwax, RN, both cancer survivors who now care for patients facing similar diagnoses within Munson Healthcare’s oncology services.

For Jenn Busick, an RN at Cowell Family Cancer Center (CFCC) in the infusion clinic in Traverse City, the cancer journey has become a source of connection and compassion. After finding a lump in her breast while breastfeeding her son and being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, she understands firsthand the emotional and physical challenges patients face.

“I am thankful and grateful to help others on the same journey that I myself have traveled,” said Busick. “It was a difficult year, but I had a lot of support which helped me and my family. I know what it feels like to sit in their chair, to wait for results, to navigate the unknown. That perspective helps me provide not just care—but comfort, understanding, and hope.”

Similarly, Rachel Weatherwax, also an RN in the infusion clinic at CFCC channels her own survivorship into advocacy and encouragement for patients and families. Diagnosed with Lymphoma and Castleman's Disease in December of 2015 while in college, Weatherwax credits early detection, expert care, and a strong support system for her recovery.

“Survivorship is a journey that doesn’t end with treatment,” Weatherwax shared. “It’s something I carry with me every day—and it’s what drives me to be there for others as they begin their own journey.”

While their stories are powerful, they are not unique. Across Munson Healthcare, many team members are cancer survivors themselves—individuals who bring a deeply personal understanding of the patient journey to their roles. These two team members represent just a small glimpse of that broader community within Munson’s workforce.

This year’s National Cancer Survivor Month is particularly meaningful as Munson Healthcare’s Cowell Family Cancer Center celebrates its 10th anniversary, marking a decade of advanced, patient-centered cancer care in northern Michigan.

To commemorate both the anniversary and survivors throughout the region, Munson Healthcare is inviting the community to attend the Traverse City Pit Spitters’ “Spit on Cancer Night” on June 20. The event will honor cancer survivors, raise awareness, and bring the community together in support of those impacted by cancer.

“Celebrating our survivors—especially those who now serve as caregivers—highlights the heart of our mission,” said Kathy LaRaia, VP Oncology Services. “As we mark 10 years of the Cowell Family Cancer Center, we’re reminded of the lives touched, the progress made, and the hope that continues to drive us forward.”

Observed each June, National Cancer Survivor Month recognizes the millions of cancer survivors nationwide while raising awareness of the ongoing challenges faced after diagnosis and treatment.

Munson Healthcare remains committed to delivering high-quality cancer care, advancing early detection, and supporting patients and families through every stage of their journey.
