September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
In recognition of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, Munson Healthcare urologist Dr. Emily Stevens will present a community education program focused on men's health at the Friendship Center of Emmet County, located at 1322 Anderson Road in Petoskey, on Monday, September 21, at 1 p.m.
The free presentation will cover important men's health topics, including prostate cancer awareness, screening, prevention, and treatment options. Dr. Stevens will also address two common but often difficult-to-discuss conditions that affect many men: urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction.
According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men, excluding skin cancers. An estimated 333,830 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in the United States in 2026, and approximately 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime.
"Many men's health issues are highly treatable, but too often people delay seeking care because they are uncomfortable discussing symptoms," said Dr. Stevens. "My goal is to provide accurate information, answer questions, and help men feel empowered to prioritize their health."
During the presentation, attendees will learn:
- Risk factors and warning signs of prostate cancer
- The importance of screenings and early detection
- Common misconceptions about prostate cancer
- Treatment options available for prostate conditions
- Causes and treatment options for male urinary incontinence
- Causes and treatment options for erectile dysfunction
The event is open to the public and provides an opportunity for community members to ask questions and learn more about maintaining their health and well-being.
