Munson Medical Center’s Cowell Family Cancer Center (CFCC) recently achieved accreditation through the National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer (NAPRC), a distinction awarded by the American College of Surgeons. Munson Medical Center is one of only 8 hospitals in Michigan with this credential.

NAPRC accreditation is more than a credential — it represents a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to care that directly benefits our patients and strengthens our professional community.

“This recognition underscores Munson’s commitment to delivering the highest-quality, evidence-based care for patients with rectal cancer across Northern Michigan,” said Ed Hagen, MD, Colorectal Surgeon at Munson Medical Center.

In 2025, Munson Medical Center treated over 60 rectal cancer patients — a volume achieved by only 6% of hospitals nationally. Additionally, Munson Medical Center in Traverse City operates the only 3 Tesla Magnet (MRI) north of Grand Rapids which allows for specific rectal MRI protocol. Also, available is the only Fixed CT/PET scanner in northern Michigan at the Cowell Family Cancer Center.

Key Values of Accreditation Include:

  • Multidisciplinary collaboration: Munson’s three fellowship-trained colorectal surgeons — Dr. Richard Tooley, Dr. Shruti Sevak, and Dr. Edward Hagen — work alongside medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, and pathologists to ensure coordinated, optimal oncologic treatment.
  • Evidence-based protocols: The team uses standardized treatment pathways proven to reduce recurrence rates and improve survival.
  • Enhanced patient outcomes: There are lower permanent colostomy rates, improved functional recovery, and better long-term quality of life.

This Accreditation places Munson’s program among a select group of hospitals nationwide committed to excellence in rectal cancer care and brings an approach to continuous improvement through regular review and adherence to updated standards.

“For our patients, this accreditation means confidence that their care is benchmarked against the best practices in the country,” added Dr. Hagen. “For our providers, it affirms the value of teamwork, innovation, and dedication to advancing surgical quality.”

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and serves as a reminder of the importance of getting screened. The American Cancer Society recommends that individuals at average risk for colorectal cancer begin screening at age 45. If you have a family history or certain genetic conditions, it is recommended to talk to your primary care provider to determine if earlier and more frequent screening may be necessary.
