New MDHHS Direction for Testing Student Athletes

Last week, MDHHS updated its Gatherings and Face Mask Order and Interim Guidance for Athletics to require weekly COVID-19 testing of student athletes starting April 2 in response to outbreaks among minors participating in school and club sports. The state is also loosening capacity restrictions at outdoor sporting facilities to not exceed 20% of the venue’s fixed seating capacity.

Interim Guidance for Athletics: Summary of Recent Changes

  • Testing guidance updated based on current levels of SARS-CoV-2 transmission and activities permitted under epidemic orders.
  • Weekly testing is required for individuals ages 13 – 19 who participate in athletics.
    • Additional testing is required for contact sports where a mask cannot safety be worn.

Also, providers and practices can request free rapid antigen test kits from the state by completing a request form.
