Throughout the pandemic we have adjusted our safety protocols and recommendations based on the science we had at hand. The initial strain of COVID-19 and subsequent variants (including Delta) all had scientific consensus that they were spread primarily by respiratory droplets. As such, the PPE and safety protocols we have in place are aimed at preventing droplet spread. However, based on early data, it seems that the Omicron variant can be spread by aerosolized (airborne) transmission. Because the COVID-19 virus is changing how it is spreading, we need to change how we are protecting the Healthcare Team and our patients.
MHC’s System Clinical Incident Command (SCIC) and System COVID Operations Incident Command (SCOIC) with support from the Executive Leadership, have chosen to recommend the following PPE changes. These changes are not mandatory but are highly recommended based on the information we have today.
Patient-facing Healthcare Team Members:
- Wear fit-tested N95s for all patient encounters.
- Wear eye protection for all patient encounters.
Important notes: - Surgical N95s should only be worn in surgical or procedural areas due to limited supply. If you are currently fit-tested for a Surgical N95 and do not work in a Surgical or Procedural area, employed providers and independent providers who provide care in our hospitals are asked to get fit-tested for a Non-Surgical N95 by contacting your local Employee Health office.
- You will need to change your mask anytime you move between caring for a COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 patient.
Non-Patient-facing Healthcare Team Members:
- Increase protection by doubling up earloop masks.
OR
- Wear KN95-level protection.
Note: We will plan to have KN95-level masks at staff entry points where we currently have earloop masks, allowing staff to make a choice between an earloop mask and KN95-level protection.
Patients
- COVID+ patients should wear K95-level protection (when in hallways, being transported, etc.).
- All other patients should increase protection by doubling up earloop masks.
Visitors
- At a minimum, all visitors are required to wear one earloop mask.
- Visitors should be offered the option to double up earloop masks.
We know that you may have additional questions about these new recommendations. Please refer to New PPE for Omicron FAQs or speak with your CMO.
Our supply of PPE remains good, but is not limitless. We will continue to evaluate new information as it becomes available and adjust our recommendations and Infection Prevention practices as needed. The safety of the Healthcare Team remains a top priority.
