Spring Forward: Munson Healthcare Shares Simple Ways to Support Healthy Sleep

Spring Forward: Munson Healthcare Shares Simple Ways to Support Healthy Sleep
03.03.2026

As we prepare to “spring forward” on March 8, sleep specialists at Munson Healthcare are encouraging the community to use the time change as an opportunity to reset healthy sleep habits. While losing an hour of sleep can temporarily affect how rested we feel, simple steps and awareness can help most people transition smoothly.

Daylight Saving Time can bring small shifts to the body’s internal clock, sometimes leading to short-term fatigue or trouble falling asleep. For those who already experience sleep challenges, the change may be more noticeable—but experts say being proactive can make a significant difference.

“Most people underestimate how much a one‑hour shift can impact their sleep cycle,” said Dr. Abdul Malik, Director of Munson’s Sleep Disorders Centers. “When we lose an hour, our brains and bodies feel that disruption for several days. Taking simple steps—like easing your bedtime earlier and getting morning sunlight—can make a meaningful difference in how alert and rested you feel.”

Malik says the spring transition is a great reminder to pay attention to sleep patterns—especially if problems are already present.

“Sleep is one of the most important foundations of good health,” he said. “If you find that fatigue, snoring, restless legs, or difficulty staying asleep are ongoing issues, not just something you notice during the time change, we encourage community members to reach out. Many sleep disorders are highly treatable once identified.”

Tips for a Smooth Transition into Daylight Saving Time

Munson Healthcare recommends a few healthy habits in the days before and after March 8:

  • Shift your bedtime earlier by 10–15 minutes each night leading up to the change
  • Keep a consistent sleep and wake schedule
  • Limit caffeine and screen use in the evening
  • Get natural morning light to help regulate your internal clock
  • Create a calm sleep environment—cool, dark, and quiet
