MHC COVID-19 Treatment Guidelines Updated

MHC’s COVID-19 Treatment Guidelines has been updated in response to the FDA issuing an EUA for Tocilizumab. Although the FDA has recommended changes to the usage criteria for Tocilizumab, MHC’s Tocilizumab use criteria remains the same.

Tocilizumab Process Changes

  1. The Tocilizumab FDA Fact Sheet must be provided to the patient prior to ordering.
  2. Ordering provider’s progress note should state: provided FDA fact sheet, explained risks/possible benefits, and the patient or caregiver consented verbally.

COVID-19 Patient Care

Providers’ Role During a Disaster/Emergency Response

The following notice to providers (which ran in Medical Staff News on 7/8/21) meets a Joint Commission requirement: “The hospital communicates, in writing, with each of its licensed independent practitioners regarding his or her role(s) in emergency response and to whom he or she reports during an emergency.”

During a disaster, providers have the following roles and responsibilities in an emergency response:

  • Participate in disaster credentialing.
  • Based on hospital privileging, a provider may be called upon to take on a role outside of their daily duties. Examples include: support Ask a Nurse hotline, provide telehealth services, practice in different location, etc.
  • Monitor communications from Munson Healthcare.
  • Reports to their manager and their primary hospital’s Chief Medical Officer.

Isotope Shortage for Gallbladder Imaging

  • We continue to experience a shortage of Mebrofenin cold kits, which are used for gallbladder imaging.
  • There will be no Mebrofenin cold kits made for the weekend (July 10-11).
  • Schedule permitting, we are able to conduct gallbladder imaging scheduled before 10 am, Monday – Friday.

MHC Centralizing Switchboard Services – Cadillac Hospital Transitions Next

  • MHC is continuing the process of centralizing system switchboard services at an off-campus location in TC.*
  • There will be one daily call calendar for the system, a standard paging process, and a system database with
up-to-date information to direct internal and external customers.
  • The transition will be seamless for callers, as they will be transferred to patients/departments in the same way they always have.
  • Local Switchboard phone number isn’t changing.
  • Switchboard message, overhead paging, and codes will remain the same.
  • Provider paging will remain the same, referencing on on-call calendars. Switchboard will use alternate communication means if pages are not answered after 2nd attempt, including cell, home, and office numbers listed in the provider’s profile.
  • Facility’s pager replacement and troubleshooting process will remain the same.
  • POMH and Grayling Hospital have already transitioned.
  • Cadillac Hospital transitions on July 19, 2021.
