Munson Healthcare Raises Awareness for Stroke Prevention and Rapid Treatment During Stroke Awareness Month

As Stroke Awareness Month closes this May, Munson Healthcare is encouraging Northern Michigan residents to learn the warning signs of stroke, take steps to reduce their risk, and act quickly in an emergency to help save lives and prevent long-term disability.

Stroke is a leading cause of death and long-term disability in the United States. However, many strokes are preventable, and prompt treatment can significantly improve outcomes for patients.

“We want our community to understand that stroke is both highly treatable and, in many cases, preventable,” said Gary B. Rajah, MD, Endovascular/Cerebrovascular Neurosurgeon Surgical Director, Munson Healthcare Comprehensive Stroke Program. “Recognizing the signs and seeking emergency care immediately can make the difference between recovery and lifelong disability.”

Munson Healthcare emphasizes the importance of remembering the acronym BE FAST to identify stroke symptoms:

  • B – Balance: Sudden loss of balance or coordination
  • E – Eyes: Sudden vision changes
  • F – Face: Facial drooping
  • A – Arms: Arm weakness or numbness
  • S – Speech: Slurred speech or difficulty speaking
  • T – Time: Call 911 immediately

“Time is brain,” added Rajah. “Every minute a stroke goes untreated, brain cells are lost. That’s why calling 911 right away is critical—emergency responders can begin care immediately and ensure patients get to the right facility as quickly as possible.”

Munson Medical Center is home to the Witham Family Comprehensive Stroke Center and provides advanced stroke care across the region, including rapid evaluation, imaging, and access to life-saving treatments. Patients in Northern Michigan benefit from coordinated care designed to reduce treatment times and improve recovery outcomes.

In addition to recognizing symptoms, Munson Healthcare encourages individuals to take steps to reduce their stroke risk, including:

  • Managing high blood pressure
  • Controlling diabetes and cholesterol
  • Quitting smoking
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Staying physically active

“Small lifestyle changes can significantly reduce your risk of stroke,” said Dr. Brent Flusty, Vascular and Interventional Neurologist, Medical Director of Stroke for Munson Healthcare. “Regular check-ups and managing chronic conditions are key components of prevention.”
