Statement - Munson Healthcare today issued the following statement regarding citizen involvement during Saturday's incident:

"We want to confirm that Derrick Perry, an off-duty Munson Healthcare employee, was part of the citizen apprehension of the suspect in the Walmart incident last Saturday. We recognize his courage, yet we want to honor him and his family's request for privacy during this difficult time as they process these events. Thank you for respecting their privacy."

As of this morning, Munson Healthcare is continuing to care for 11 individuals who were injured in yesterday’s tragic incident at the Walmart in Traverse City. Over the past 12 hours, we’ve seen encouraging signs of recovery from our patients, and their current conditions are as follows:

  • 7 are in fair condition
  • 4 are in serious condition
  • 0 are in critical condition

Our dedicated team of physicians, surgeons, nurses, clinicians, and support staff remain focused on providing a healing environment for all those affected by this tragic incident. Their unwavering commitment and compassion are a testament to the strength and resilience of our healthcare community. Additionally, we are working on providing additional emotional support for our employees in light of this incident.

Following the violent attack at the Walmart in Traverse City this afternoon, here are the patient conditions that we can currently share with the news media:

  • Munson Healthcare is currently treating 11 patients as a result of this stabbing incident – 5 are in serious condition and 6 are in critical condition at this time.  

Munson Healthcare leadership wishes to thank our amazing staff, which responded commendably and admirably under these tragic circumstances. Every single department and team at Munson Medical Center, and throughout our healthcare system, stepped up to ensure not only that the victims of this tragedy were cared for, but that all our other patients continued to receive the care that they needed as well.

Munson Healthcare is aware of the tragic incident that occurred earlier today at the Walmart in Traverse City. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this event, and we are grateful to the first responders and law enforcement for their swift action.

We can confirm that 10 victims are being treated at Munson Medical Center. As a result, our Emergency Department is currently experiencing a higher-than-usual volume of patients.
