Healthcare in northern Michigan is funded in three ways:

• The healthcare system’s operating margin
• Philanthropy  
• Debt

The impact of donor support is tremendous. Each donated dollar equals $22 in billable services.

For instance, Munson Healthcare organizations receive about $7.6 million each year through charitable giving. The organization would need to bill an equivalent $170 million in healthcare services to replace that amount with operating dollars.

Donated dollars are never used to cover fundraising costs. Every donated dollar is spent directly on whatever purpose the donor indicates. 

Vital Support for Capital Projects

As a nonprofit organization, revenue alone does not cover all of the costs associated with maintaining and upgrading our community hospitals. Historically, generous donors have helped fund large facility projects throughout northern Michigan.

It takes $3.5 million a day to keep all eight Munson Healthcare hospitals open.
