The College of American Pathologists (CAP) has awarded accreditation to the Munson Healthcare Cadillac Hospital Laboratory based on results of a recent on-site inspection. Cadillac Hospital is now one of more than 8,000 CAP-accredited facilities worldwide. The accreditation is valid for a period of two years.

Cadillac Hospital Lab Staff“The pandemic has placed enormous stress on the laboratory as COVID-19 tests have been implemented and performed with limited staff. I am so proud of our staff for maintaining the excellence required for successful CAP recertification during these difficult times,” said Dr. Russell Hjelmstad, Laboratory Medical Director.

“This CAP inspection accreditation notice has extra meaning. It has been a challenging year for all laboratories, and our accreditation shows that our Laboratory staff has met those challenges and continues to perform at a high level. I am very proud of our staff and the work they do every day,” notes John McGiness, Cadillac Hospital Laboratory Manager.

The U. S. recognizes the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program, begun in early 1960’s, as being equal to or more stringent than the government’s own inspection program. During the CAP accreditation process, which is designed to ensure the highest standard of care for all patients, inspectors examine the records and quality control procedures for the preceding two years. CAP inspectors also review staff qualifications, equipment, facilities, safety program and records, and overall management.

As the world’s largest organization of board-certified pathologists and leading provider of laboratory accreditation and proficiency testing programs, the CAP serves patients, pathologists and the public by fostering and advocating excellence in the practice of pathology and laboratory medicine worldwide.
